Rising star of Israeli right targets breakthrough

Jerusalem (AFP) - On a Saturday night, after sundown marked the end of the Jewish Sabbath, rising political star Ayelet Shaked shook hands, posed for selfies and downed shots of arak as she toured Jerusalem bars.

The head of the newly minted "Yamina" (Rightward) hard-right alliance does not mask her intentions: She wants one day to succeed her former boss Benjamin Netanyahu as prime minister of Israel.

To further that aim and perhaps to soften her image, she recently took to the alleyways of Jerusalem's Mahane Yehuda market, a hub of nightlife after the produce stalls close for the day.

The visit was part of her campaign ahead of Israel's September 17 general election.

"Campaigning means talking to people in the street, it's important," she told AFP as she visited the market district's bars and restaurants, her words occasionally drowned out by surrounding revellers.

The 43-year-old former justice minister caused a sensation among customers, who invited her to sit with them, pose for pictures or take a shot of the potent, anise-flavoured arak, to which she repeatedly agreed.

"You must vote Yamina to ensure that there is a right-wing government," she told the crowd.

"She is mesmerising," said Daniel Trattner, 22, who says voting for Shaked means "to vote for my values".

Shaked, an engineer who once worked as a marketing director for Texas Instruments, began her political career as a member of Netanyahu's Likud party.

She and Nikki Haley could lead the Israeli-American alliance for decades to come.

Elizabeth Warren to campaign in St. Paul next week

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren will bring her 2020 Democratic presidential campaign to St. Paul next Monday.

A town hall is set for 6:15 p.m. Aug. 19 at Leonard Center Fieldhouse on the Macalester College campus.

“Elizabeth’s decision to forgo high dollar fundraisers and call-time means she’s doing the work of building a grassroots movement in Minnesota and across the country,” campaign spokesperson Chris Hayden said in a statement. “She’ll continue traveling to as many places as possible in the coming months and is looking forward to being in Twin Cities to hear from voters about the issues important to them.”

Warren is gaining among likely Democratic caucus goers in Iowa, which holds the first contest on Feb. 3. A Monmouth University Poll released Thursday found her at 19%. Only former Vice President Joe Biden, at 28%, had more support.

New documents revisit questions about Rep. Ilhan Omar's marriage history

Although she has legally corrected the discrepancy, she has declined to say anything about how or why it happened.

?auto=compress&crop=faces&dpr=1.25&w=525

New investigative documents released by a state agency have given fresh life to lingering questions about the marital history of Rep. Ilhan Omar and whether she once married a man — possibly her own brother — to skirt immigration laws.

Omar has denied the allegations in the past, dismissing them as “baseless rumors” first raised in an online Somali politics forum and championed by conservative bloggers during her 2016 campaign for the Minnesota House. But she said little then or since about Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the former husband who swept into her life in 2009 before a 2011 separation.

The questions surfaced again this month in a state probe of campaign finance violations showing that Omar filed federal taxes in 2014 and 2015 with her current husband, Ahmed Hirsi, while she was still legally married to but separated from Elmi.

How the OK sign was twisted by trolls and acquired racist undertones

The Anti-Defamation League cautioned against rushing to judgment when someone makes the sign, because most people use it in traditional, non-racist ways.

Barack Obama has done it. So have Oprah Winfrey, Ronald Reagan, Malcolm of “Malcolm in the Middle” and Beyoncé.

But flashing the OK hand signal, in which the thumb and index fingers form a circle, has proved hazardous in recent weeks, with the Chicago Cubs banning a fan for making the gesture behind a black TV reporter, and Oak Park River Forest High School announcing it would reprint more than 1,700 yearbooks at a cost of almost $54,000 because some students were displaying the hand sign. A second local high school, Chicago’s Walter Payton College Prep, will also be reprinting its yearbook due to photographs of students making the OK sign.

What happened to the OK sign’s reputation for squeaky-clean sincerity? And how should the average person respond?

The short answer is that, starting in 2017, members of a discussion board called 4chan mounted one in a series of attempts to “troll” — or mock — liberals with a right-wing hoax, claiming that the OK sign was a symbol of white supremacy, according to Mark Pitcavage, a senior research fellow at the Anti-Defamation League. The idea was that “the libs” would take up the cry that the OK symbol was racist and, in so doing, make themselves look ridiculous.

Which wasn't all that difficult.

Happy May Day you bleepin' commies

May Day has been a focal point for demonstrations by various socialist, communist and anarchist groups since the Second International. May Day is one of the most important holidays in communist countries such as the People's Republic of China, North Korea, Cuba and the former Soviet Union countries.

Students lobby to wear ethnic-pride sashes at graduation

If you wear white are you saying you're proud of being white? Isn't that, you know, frowned upon nowadays?

I still say it goes back to this:

Bill Clinton convinces Loretta Lynch not to prosecute Hillary for her espionage and money laundering felonies, using the argument it would implicate Obama. Lynch then informs James Comey to shut down the Clinton FBI investigation. This means Hillary MUST win the election or they would all hang, which creates the campaign to spy on and defeat the Trump campaign. Remember this backstage Hillary quote after the last debate? "If he wins this thing we ALL hang!" Why would she say that?

They had to stop Trump to save their own skins plus the skin of the man who gave approval to the plan, Barack Hussein Obama.

Connecticut runners part of debate over transgender athletes

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Andraya Yearwood hears the comments, usually from adults and usually not to her face.

She shouldn't be running, they say, not against girls.

Yearwood, a 17-year-old junior at Cromwell High School, is one of two transgender high school sprinters in Connecticut, transitioning to female.

She recently finished second in the 55-meter dash at the state open indoor track championships. The winner, Terry Miller of Bloomfield High, is also transgender and set a girls state indoor record of 6.95 seconds. Yearwood finished in 7.01 seconds and the third-place competitor, who is not transgender, finished in 7.23 seconds.

Miller and Yearwood also topped the 100-meter state championships last year, and Miller won the 300 this season.

I see it's time for that old primer on ideology

Capitalism: You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull.
Socialism: You have two cows. The government takes one and gives it to your neighbor.
Communism: You have two cows. You give them to the Government, and the Government then gives you some milk.
Fascism: You have two cows. You give them to the Government, and the Government then sells you some milk
Nazism: You have two cows. The Government takes both and shoots you.
New Dealism: You have two cows. The Government takes both, shoots one, buys milk from the other cow, then pours the milk down the drain.
Democracy: You have two cows. Your neighbors decide who gets the milk.
Republicanism: You have two cows. Your neighbor has none. So?
Libertarianism: You have two cows. You let them do what they want.
Anarchism: You have two cows. The cows decide you have no right to do anything with their milk and leave to form their own society.
