Prosecutor Scrutinizing Ex-CIA Director Brennan

“The federal prosecutor scrutinizing the Russia investigation has begun examining the role of the former CIA director John Brennan in how the intelligence community assessed Russia’s 2016 election interference,” the New York Times reports.

“John Durham, the United States attorney leading the investigation, has requested Mr. Brennan’s emails, call logs and other documents from the CIA… He wants to learn what Mr. Brennan told other officials, including the former FBI director James Comey, about his and the CIA’s views of a notorious dossier of assertions about Russia and Trump associates.”

Ruh roh.

He lied to congress about the Steele dossier.

As Obama ages, he's becoming a conservative. heh

“If all you’re doing is casting stones, you’re probably not going to get that far,” the former president said.

Former President Barack Obama says “compromise” shouldn’t be frowned upon and described Twitter outrage as “not activism.”

Speaking at the Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago on Tuesday, the former president called on Americans to abandon ideological purity tests in politics.

“This idea of purity, and you’re never compromised, and you’re always politically woke and all that stuff. You should get over that quickly,” he said. “The world is messy. There are ambiguities. People who do really good stuff have flaws.”

Obama also called out what he perceived as a “danger” among younger people.

“There is this sense sometimes of ‘the way of me making change is to be as judgmental as possible about other people, and that’s enough,’” he said, then offered an example:

Like if I tweet or hashtag about how you didn’t do something right or used the wrong verb. Then, I can sit back and feel pretty good about myself because, ‘Man, you see how woke I was? I called you out.’ I’m gonna get on TV. Watch my show. Watch ‘Grown-ish.’ You know, that’s not activism. That’s not bringing about change. If all you’re doing is casting stones, you’re probably not going to get that far.

Nobel in Economics Is Awarded for Work Toward Alleviating Poverty

It turns out the committee awarded the prize to these three for the unique idea of asking poor people what they need. Seriously.

"This year’s laureates have introduced a new approach to obtaining reliable answers about the best ways to fight global poverty. In brief, it involves dividing this issue into smaller, more manageable, questions – for example, the most effective interventions for improving educational outcomes or child health. They have shown that these smaller, more precise, questions are often best answered via carefully designed experiments among the people who are most affected."

Why is the work important?
According to the prize committee: The laureates’ research findings – and those of the researchers following in their footsteps – have dramatically improved our ability to fight poverty in practice. As a direct result of one of their studies, more than five million Indian children have benefited from effective programs of remedial tutoring in schools. Another example is the heavy subsidies for preventive health care that have been introduced in many countries.

Unemployment hits 50-year low of 3.5%

U.S. employers added a modest 136,000 jobs in September, enough to help lower the unemployment rate to a new five-decade low of 3.5%.

Hiring has slowed this year as the U.S.-China trade war has intensified, global growth has slowed and businesses have cut back on their investment spending. Even so, hiring has averaged 157,000 in the past three months, enough to absorb new job seekers and lower unemployment over time.

This is why the democrat debates don't discuss the economy.

The Trump whistleblower may not be a whistleblower at all

Despite the paucity of facts, some reasonable observations and conclusions can be drawn.

1. It appears that an American spy in one of our intelligence agencies may have been spying on our own president. The complaint suggests that this intel agent was listening in on Trump’s conversation with a foreign leader. Was this person officially asked to listen to the conversation or was he or she secretly listening in? We don’t know.

2. This agent, who is an unelected and inferior federal employee in the government hierarchy, apparently believes that it is his/her job to second-guess the motivation behind the words of the elected president, who is the most superior officer in the U.S. government.

3. Article II of the Constitution gives the president sweeping power to conduct foreign affairs, negotiate with leaders of other nations, make demands or offer promises. The Constitution does not grant the power of review, approval or disapproval to spies or other unelected officials in the executive branch.

4. The ICWPA law defines the parameters of an “urgent concern” complaint as an abuse or violation of law “relating to the funding, administration, or operations of an intelligence activity involving classified information, but does not include differences of opinions concerning public policy matters.” The president’s conversation with a foreign leader does not seem to fall under this whistleblower definition.

5. It appears the acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI) agrees with this assessment. His agency’s general counsel wrote a letter stating the complaint did not meet the ICWPA definition because it involved conduct “from someone outside the intel community and did not relate to intelligence activity,” according to a report by Fox News. This is why the DNI refused to forward the complaint to congress.

Gregg Jarrett makes some great points.

Rising star of Israeli right targets breakthrough

Jerusalem (AFP) - On a Saturday night, after sundown marked the end of the Jewish Sabbath, rising political star Ayelet Shaked shook hands, posed for selfies and downed shots of arak as she toured Jerusalem bars.

The head of the newly minted "Yamina" (Rightward) hard-right alliance does not mask her intentions: She wants one day to succeed her former boss Benjamin Netanyahu as prime minister of Israel.

To further that aim and perhaps to soften her image, she recently took to the alleyways of Jerusalem's Mahane Yehuda market, a hub of nightlife after the produce stalls close for the day.

The visit was part of her campaign ahead of Israel's September 17 general election.

"Campaigning means talking to people in the street, it's important," she told AFP as she visited the market district's bars and restaurants, her words occasionally drowned out by surrounding revellers.

The 43-year-old former justice minister caused a sensation among customers, who invited her to sit with them, pose for pictures or take a shot of the potent, anise-flavoured arak, to which she repeatedly agreed.

"You must vote Yamina to ensure that there is a right-wing government," she told the crowd.

"She is mesmerising," said Daniel Trattner, 22, who says voting for Shaked means "to vote for my values".

Shaked, an engineer who once worked as a marketing director for Texas Instruments, began her political career as a member of Netanyahu's Likud party.

She and Nikki Haley could lead the Israeli-American alliance for decades to come.

Elizabeth Warren to campaign in St. Paul next week

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren will bring her 2020 Democratic presidential campaign to St. Paul next Monday.

A town hall is set for 6:15 p.m. Aug. 19 at Leonard Center Fieldhouse on the Macalester College campus.

“Elizabeth’s decision to forgo high dollar fundraisers and call-time means she’s doing the work of building a grassroots movement in Minnesota and across the country,” campaign spokesperson Chris Hayden said in a statement. “She’ll continue traveling to as many places as possible in the coming months and is looking forward to being in Twin Cities to hear from voters about the issues important to them.”

Warren is gaining among likely Democratic caucus goers in Iowa, which holds the first contest on Feb. 3. A Monmouth University Poll released Thursday found her at 19%. Only former Vice President Joe Biden, at 28%, had more support.
Macalester College is right down the street from me. I'm thinking of showing up wearing an Indian headdress. heh. Do you think they would allow me to stay?
