Lee throws in the towel

on this date in 1865, General Lee surrenders the 28,000 men of the Army of Northern Virginia.
He surrenders his command to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse.
This is the third Confederate to surrender to Grant during the Civil War.
