Would you buy a home with foundation repairs?

Relocating for work and found the perfect home. The problem is that it had $8000 in foundation repair work a few years back. Concret slab foundation on a sloping lot with retaining walls supporting one side of the home. Oh and the area has expansive clay soil. Yea or nay?

Militia threat shuts down Oregon Statehouse amid walkout

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Capitol will be closed Saturday due to a "possible militia threat" from right-wing protesters as a walkout by Republican lawmakers over landmark climate change legislation drags on.

Republican state senators fled the Legislature — and some, the state — earlier this week to deny the majority Democrats enough votes to take up the climate bill, which would dramatically reduce fossil fuel emissions by 2050. It would be the second program of its kind in the nation after California if passed.

Gov. Kate Brown then dispatched the state police to round up the rogue lawmakers, but none appeared in the Capitol on Friday and the stalemate seemed destined to enter its third day with a week left in the legislative session.

Right-wing groups posted their support for the GOP lawmakers Friday on social media — in one instance offering to provide escorts to them should the state police come for them.

A group of local Republicans were set to protest inside the Capitol on Saturday when lawmakers were present, and anti-government groups threatened to join, prompting the statehouse shutdown.

One of the groups, the Oregon Three Percenters, joined an armed takeover of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 2016. Dozens of people occupied the remote Oregon refuge for more than a month to protest federal control of Western lands. The standoff began to unravel when authorities fatally shot the group's spokesman and arrested key leaders as they headed to a community meeting.

"The Oregon State Police has recommended that the Capitol be closed tomorrow due to a possible militia threat," Carol Currie, spokeswoman for Senate President Peter Courtney, said in an e-mail to The Associated Press late Friday. https://news.yahoo.com/militia-threat-shuts-down-oregon-041210982.html

72 Philadelphia Police Officers Placed On Desk Duty Over Offensive Social Media Posts

The Philadelphia Police Department has pulled 72 officers off their regular duties as authorities investigate inflammatory social media posts revealed in a database that found thousands of offensive postings by current and former officers, the city's police commissioner said Wednesday.

Police officials in Philadelphia are describing the action as the largest removal of officers from the street in recent memory.
"We are equally as disgusted by many of the posts that you saw and in many cases, the rest of the nation saw," said Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross.

It is the latest fallout since the advocacy group The Plain View Project earlier this month released thousands of Facebook posts and comments by current and former police officers that range from racist memes, to posts celebrating violence and messages containing Islamophobic themes, among other offensive material.

Deer Park man shoots son, then has a father-son talk before stabbing him to death

-snip-
"(Fricks) stated that he had called law enforcement on (his son) in the past, but they were never able to fix it," a prosecutor said. "So today, he decided to fix it."

Just the day before, the son had broken his phone, so Fricks took him to a local electronics store to get it fixed, prosecutors said. On the way home, the son began kicking the back of the front passenger seat where the father's girlfriend was sitting, Fricks told detectives.

Then, around 11 a.m. Sunday, Fricks armed himself with a .380 pistol and sat in wait while his son went to get fast food for lunch, prosecutors said. As the son walked into their home in the 1300 block of Meadowlark Street, Fricks asked him what he had ordered.

"(Fricks) stated that he was prepared to shoot (his son) in the back, and that was his plan," prosecutors said. "He stated (his son) made the smart remark and turned to him. (Fricks) just started shooting him until nothing else came out of the handgun. After the shooting, (his son) was still alive."

As his son was dying on the floor, Fricks initiated a "father-son" conversation with him, according to court records. After about 20 minutes, the son reportedly grabbed his father by the arm, at which point the father – already armed with a kitchen knife – stabbed him several times, prosecutors said.

Alabama 'has gone too far' with 'extreme' abortion bill, Pat Robertson says

Excerpt:

“I think Alabama has gone too far," Robertson said Wednesday on his long-running TV program, "The 700 Club," referring to the hefty prison sentence for anyone who performs an abortion -- 99 years or life behind bars.

The bill, awaiting a signature by Republican Gov. Kay Ivey, is further reigniting a debate over Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion across the nation, and it could have justices rethinking that landmark ruling, but Robertson has his doubts about putting forth this case as a test case.

"It’s an extreme law, and they want to challenge Roe vs. Wade, but my humble view is that this is not the case we want to bring to the Supreme Court because I think this one will lose," he said.

When Pat Robertson says you've gone to far (right), you can be certain you're riding on the crazy train.

CEO Of U.S. Gun-Maker Faces Jail In Germany

A decade after Sig Sauer inked a deal to sell up to $306 million worth of pistols to Colombia's National Police, company CEO Ron Cohen is facing jail time in Germany for making the sale.

German prosecutors accuse Cohen of colluding with Sig Sauer's sister company in Germany to violate that country's export rules. Under German law, companies are prohibited from exporting firearms or other weapons to countries in conflict. That includes Colombia, which is slowly emerging from a half-century of armed conflict.

German officials allege Sig Sauer manufactured at least 38,000 pistols in the company's facility in the town of Eckernforde between 2009 and 2011, before shipping the weapons to its U.S. entity's headquarters in New Hampshire, which then completed the transaction with Colombia. Sig Sauer is alleged to have covered up the shipment's final destination by submitting false paperwork, known as end-use certificates, to German export officials, stating that the weapons were bound solely for the United States.

The stakes for Cohen are serious: If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and millions of dollars in fines. Last week, a German court found arms-maker Heckler & Koch guilty of similar export-related charges involving a sale of weapons to Mexico. While a former CEO was acquitted, two employees received suspended jail sentences, and the company was ordered to repay $4.2 million.

Ricky Jay, my favorite magician and character actor has passed

https://www.npr.org/2018/11/30/671637852/ricky-jay-remembered-from-the-wings-a-personal-assistants-thoughts-on-the-late-s?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=2059

I first watched Ricky Jay on an ABC magic special in a 80’s. Later I enjoyed him in watching David Mamet films of the late 80’s and ninties such as “House of Games,” “The Spanish Prisoner,” “Things Change,” “Redbelt” and “State and Main.” In the 2000’s Jay had a wonderful character role on HBO’s Deadwood.

Jay also consulted on major box office hits like Born on the Fourth of July (designing Gary Sinese’s wheel chair), The Illusionist and The Prestige movies, two magic theme films released the same year and heavily leveraging Jay’s unique talents. If you you want a real treat watch a few of his card tricks and ponder the years of dedication and discipline it took Ricky Jay to master his art.

This may not be his best, trick but there are dozens more available on Youtube
